Virtual reality is a means for creating comprehensive illusions that you are in a different place, perhaps a fantastical, alien enviornment, perhaps with a body that is far from human.

And yet, it is also the farthest-reaching apparatus for researching what a human being is in terms of cognition and perception.

Yuri : What's a gap year ?

Lily : Well, it has several meanings but in this case it means when a student takes  a break of one academic year in between high school and university.

Yuri : Do you mean when they fail to enter the university of their choice at the first  attempt ? We have that system in Japan too.

Lily : Actually, although that might be a reason for some students to take a gap year, it is far from being the most common one here in Britain.

Yuri : Hey, Lily, stop playing with your tablet ! You asked me to help you with your math homework now, remember ?

Lily :  Oh, sorry, Yuri. I'll put it away.

Yuri : What were you looking at anyway ?

Lily : It was a website about gap years.

was being rammed(受け身の進行形)

Our teacher used to tell us to ' express in our words ' some passage from whatever play of Shakespeare was being rammed down our reluctant throats.

ram ~down one's throat 「繰り返して言って~を飲み込ませる,覚えさせる」
